MORRICONE & CINEMA.

The Art of The Score.

Perfectly Suited

Andrea and film scoring just go together.  In fact, they are quite inseparable.  The dynamic, inherent cinematic quality of his highly acclaimed compositions coupled with a relentless passion for innovation in his music make his film scores truly remarkable. His mastery as a composer of big cinematic themes shines through in these select films that represent diverse genres and are set in a variety of cultures and countries.

Philosophy on Film Scoring

Andrea's first film score, "Love Theme" for Cinema Paradiso, received worldwide acclaim, and was written while he was still studying at the music Conservatory.  Believing that film scores have several tasks to fulfill, his philosophy resonates with that of Pasolini, a leading Italian poet, writer, filmmaker and director of the 20th century.

The definition that Pasolini gave about music and film is amazing. Essentially he said that music for a film is meant to give to the image a depth that the images would not have without it. What I believe he meant by this “depth” is that the music is going to make the images more trustable, more believable that the movie is reality.
— Andrea Morricone

Andrea's scores have the exceptional ability of giving to film the special quality of being emotional, drawing audiences in both immediately and long after the film has ended through captivating film soundtracks. His scores reflect the quality of being respectful of the film but not neutral, present but not overpowering, maintaining that the score should not be so strong as to suffocate the film, but should breathe with the film. He has also adopted the latest technology in evolving his own particular style, convinced that scores must nowadays absolutely incorporate technology as well as reflect other factors.

The score must also possess the feminine quality of giving all of itself without giving up the personality. This is important. The score has to also work on its own. . .it must stand alone as a good piece of music.
— Andrea Morricone

New Heights

Indeed his scores reflect his philsophy.  With over twenty original film scores and soundtracks to his credit, and a vast repertoire of new, evolutionary scores in his composition arsenal, it's clear that the maestro takes the art of cinematic scoring to new heights. Enjoy audio samples from some of his most memorable scores below.
